What's the usual-suspects list?

The Green End Usual Suspects list is a mailing list that a few people use when inviting people to certain private events.

How do I get off the list?

If you want to be removed from the list, please contact usual-suspects-request@greenend.org.uk by email stating that you wish to be removed from the usual suspects list. When you have been removed, you will receive an email confirming this.

How do I get on the list?

Most people get on the list because one of the list users asks for them to be added. If someone asks that you be added, you will receive an email indicating who asked for you to be added.

If you are known to the maintainer, then it may be sufficient for you to send email to usual-suspects-request@greenend.org.uk asking to be added. However, if you are not known to the maintainer, this approach is unlikely to work; the maintainer will probably forward your request to the list users for their consideration.

Asking the maintainer in person will never, ever work; please use email.

How do I add someone else to the list?

Send email to usual-suspects-request@greenend.org.uk stating the name and email address of the person you would like to be added. You should be sure that they are happy with this. If you are not known to the maintainer, your request may be forwarded to the list users for consideration.

How do I send a message to the list?

Just send your message to usual-suspects@greenend.org.uk. The maintainer will check that the message is suitable, possibly discussing this with you and/or the list users, and if it is determined to be appropriate, forward the message to the list. No special formatting is required. Example:

From: yourname@example.com (Your name here)
To: usual-suspects@greenend.org.uk
Subject: party at Acacia Avenue, 30th February

You are invited to a party at 123 Acacia Avenue on Saturday at 8pm.
Please bring a bottle.

You are encouraged to leave plenty of time for this, as the maintainer is only human and works to his own schedule.

What messages are suitable for the list?

The intent of the list that it be used it for party invites and the like. There are no hard-and-fast rules, but you are requested to follow these guidelines regarding events advertised to the list:

  1. The event should be free to get in. This is not negotiable; this list is not intended for advertising for-pay events.
  2. The event should be a social event rather than (say) a performance or display. For example advertising a concert or play that you happen to be in would not usually be appropriate (even if it were free). (But something like "let's all go to this public fireworks display" would usually be more acceptable.)
  3. You should be basically happy for anyone on the list to take part. It's not the list maintainer's fault if someone you don't like turns up. (It'd be rude of someone to turn up when they personally knew they were unwelcome, of course.)

If in doubt, email usual-suspects-request@greenend.org.uk well before you need to send the message out.

Who is on the list?

Contact the maintainer and explain why you need to know.

Can I mail just a subset of the list?

Normally it would be more sensible to mail the people you want to mail directly, but if you think usual-suspects needs to be involved for some reason then contact the maintainer and explain what you want.

Who is the current maintainer?

The current maintainer is Richard Kettlewell. Normally if you want to contact the maintainer regarding the list you should send email to usual-suspects-request@greenend.org.uk.
